Journal #5  Due Tuesday, February 19  Minimum 90 lines (single space, continuous, with standard margins) handwritten on standard size, white, college ruled binder/filler paper. ( NOTE NEW MINIMUM.)  Write your full name on upper left corner of your paper.  The journal # and due date should be written in the upper right corner of the page.  Staple your journal pages together in the top left corner before coming to class. Make sure to write on AT LEAST 2 different topics. 1.   After finishing chapter 6 in Land of Hope you have completed reading about 1/3 of the novel. What do you think of the book? Are you enjoying it? It is difficult, average, or easy? How much time does it take you to complete the reading? Do you understand everything you read? What do you do to better understand the novel? 2.   What do you think will happen to Rebekah and her family next? 3.   What is the difference between a fact and an opinion? Is it easy or difficult for you to express your opinion? In forming your opinion, are some topics easier and some topics more difficult? In your family, was expressing your opinion encouraged? In your culture, is expressing your opinion encouraged? 4.   What is the difference between debating and arguing? Do you like to debate? Do you enjoy discussing different viewpoints? Are there any topics that you do not discuss with others because it makes you feel uncomfortable? 5.   Chapter 5 in USA is a collection of essays written by students who describe the differences between their native countries and the USA. Write your story to add to “Differences.” Describe the differences you find remarkable, difficult, exciting or frustrating between your native country and the USA. 6.   Some places have more diversity than other places. Would you rather live in an area (country, town, state, etc.) with more diversity or with less diversity? Why? 7.   We will write our first essay on the day this journal is due.
