i need help on adding mixed fractions
Solution
You have to turn both into improper fractions first.
Mixed –> Improper
Whole# Top
Bottom
To get the improper numerator:
Whole x Bottom + Top = numerator
(4) x (5) + 2 = 22
The improper denominator is the same at the mixed number denominator
5
Your first improper fraction will be: 22/5
Do the same steps and get the second fraction to be: 26/5
Now add the two improper fractions together. Because they have the same denominator you don’t have to do any further steps to create a common denominator
22 + 26 = 48 (just add the two numerators together to get new numerator)
5 5 5 (denominator stays the same when you add or sub)
Last step: Turn improper fraction back into a mixed number
How many whole times does 5 go into 48?
9 –> this is your whole number
How much left over is there?
5×9 = 45
48 – 45 = 3
so left over is 3 –> this is your numerator
5 will remain your denominator
ANSWER: 9 3/5
